Be the Valium…

My husband, Jeff Parks, is a fly fishing guide for Calmwaters Fly Fishing,

He has a client that he guides regularly.

He has many, actually, but this one has an essential, stressful job (he saves lives – literally), and fishing is his outlet. He’s a detail guy, and all the minute aspects of equipment and technique matter to him. And he’s very focused on catching fish, as are most of Jeff’s clients.

One particularly gorgeous spring day when Jeff and his client were on the river “steelheading,” and a big one got away, Tom looked at Jeff and said simply, “you are my Valium.” Even though they had lost the fish…

This became a turning point for how Jeff and I view our businesses and the “why” of what we do. It is also how we choose businesses and people to use for our own services.

I have always had a belief that “my job is to make my clients look good.” I still strive to do this every day. But now, I fully embrace that my other job is to keep my clients' stress to a minimum in the areas that I can control for them.

To be their “Valium,”…

I would have a hard time thinking of a better service than I could provide for my clients. So I chug along, trying to do a solid technical job for them and keep the atmosphere around me calm and organized.

This is also what I hope for when I am the client. I have some minor skin trouble, and I go to Total Skin &Body to keep things under control. They do a great job, but just as importantly, they make me feel calm and cared for.

I told them they were my “Valium” one day, and they loved hearing that.

It’s not enough for us to be great at what we do. It’s now paramount how we make people feel when we are providing our services. Being the “Valium” has become fundamental in our corporate culture, and I thank Tom for simply stating the obvious.

Cloud Process Creator

I craft processes and automation for future-thinking accounting professionals who believe in the mightiness of online technology.

I want every accounting professional to love running a cloud-based business as much as I do.

Embracing the cloud requires effective best practices, consistent communication, and efficient processes, systems, and workflows. That's why we have dozens of pre-built templates to take the pain out of creating optimization in your firm.

Certified or partnered in over a dozen cloud applications, Alumni Intuit International Trainer Writer Network and the FreshBooks Partner Council.

I am a runner, water/snow skier and live-music fan.

I’m always wondering what you would do more of—outside of work—if processes, automation, and apps gave you your life back.
