Don't Yuck On My Yum
I am pretty active on social media. I enjoy engaging with others and learning from them. Part of what I do on social media is post events where I host sessions (actually, my #RightHandGem posts them 😁, but I engage with the replies). And sometimes, I get these weird, negative comments.
Folks are yucking on my yum.
I only do sessions for organizations I believe in, on topics I am passionate about, and for an audience with whom my message resonates. I realize that some organizations are lightning rods for my industry peers, so occasionally, I get replies to posts that are less than kind about the organizations. I have had a few snarks about why I got a gig (instead of them). Sometimes I try to kill the yuckers with empathy and kindness, and other times if I feel the whole vibe is just too negative I pull the post down altogether.
Mostly, though, I get lovely replies and feel I am supporting the partners I work with. I am honoured that I have been given a voice to share what I know. I have a ton of industry friends way further along the cloud accounting journey than me, especially when it comes to AI, automation, the services they are offering, the teams they are building… There will always be those faster, smarter, and taller (as a skier, my personal nemesis is my height) than us, but what I have learned from years of teaching in the accounting space is that there are folks who are not where I am at. I want everyone to love running a cloud-based business as much as I do, so having platforms that allow me to lift those new to or struggling with the magic of cloud apps and the efficiency they create makes my heart sing.
I question how much longer I will be doing the amount of educating in the accounting space. I am mindful that so many voices in our industry deserve their moment, and I want to make sure I am giving them space to do that. I also want to leave the party on a high note rather than being shown the door💃. So, I have joined event committees and advisory boards. Having insight into choosing speakers has allowed me to create some resources on what goes into a solid submission*. This way I can empower the new exciting crew to get their topics chosen and share the deep knowledge they have with others.
But just like bringing the excited vibe down on my social event posts, random people have found ways to yuck on my conference committee yums. They DM me with complaints about the event or to vent about not being chosen as a speaker, where what they should have done has gone to the organization itself. It’s been a bit of a bummer, truth be told.
I am bringing this topic up cause I do realize I sound a little negative because I want y’all to feel good about what you are doing, even if you have some yuckers. Like the personal tax folks who may be feeling that it’s a service they shouldn’t be offering even if they love it, it’s profitable, or they feel they are serving those in need. There’s constant messaging around getting out of the personal tax gig - the yuckers abound. Same with payroll; we don’t offer it cause I suck at it, and it would be a lifestyle killer for a firm my size, but I appreciate all of you who do offer it, and I wouldn’t yuck on you for a second.
If you know you are in the right space, doing the right things and empowering others, stand tall and hold yourself proud.
Don’t let the yuckers diminish your yums!

Simply yours, Kellie :-}
::Shameless Call To Action::
I sell bookkeeping templates, standard operating process handbooks and client guides.
*Of course, I have had more than my fair share of submission rejections but I have also had hundreds of acceptances over the years. I don’t profess to be a speaker coach or have the magic code to get all the gigs, but every person I can help with the insights I do have feels like a win, no?
I hosted two session in Jason Staats’ Realize group on this very topic - submitting and crafting up your slides. If you join, you can access the recordings and the handouts.
