Reality Check

It’s the bluest time of the year.

I’m sure many of you may be feeling the effects of shorter days, colder weather and an impending tax season.

Plus, you may be thinking you are the only one who doesn’t have their act together on everything (anything…). You are comparing your reality with your picture of your peers’ “success”.

Worse, maybe you aren’t even considering yourself a peer of people with a big social footprint (BSF’rs).

Well here’s a reality check for you. No one - and I mean no one - has it all together, all the time. And for some, it’s a challenge to get it together even some of the time…

In fact, I’m guessing many of the folks you think are…

  • Kicking ass with their processes

  • Have only 5-star clients so every day is a sing-song of joyous collaboration

  • Employee the best & brightest who follow all their SOPs to letter

…may be struggling with something(s) right now too.

There’s often crap to deal with no matter how succinctly you lay things out, how hard you dig in and how much you give an erstwhile effort.

Misery loves company so I wanted to point out that everyone has a story, or many - personal and business - that affect how effective they are at work and how much enjoyment they are getting out of it.

I’m guessing that below the surface you know this, but today I wanted to lift you up a little knowing you are not alone. I’m reminding you that we have fabulous, collaborative communities of accounting professionals and app partners - your peers - that want to ease the doldrums of this season for you.

That includes many of the prominent peeps in our space, the BSF’rs, who may themselves be feeling overwhelmed. When you see them offering advice don’t compare yourself to where they seem to be. Instead accept their advice readily, knowing that they are not always smarter, faster or stronger. Perhaps they are simply earlier in the game, seasoned with the stories they have lived and the mentors they have had.

The BSF’rs could be looking to others for a leg up right now too.

Give yourself a break from feeling alone. Join in the positive conversations or feel warm and cozied by *quietly watching along* knowing that we all have something going on that being part of communities can help lift us out of.

Sociable

- said in your head in a loud sing-songy voice

What communities am I digging on?

  • The Workflow Wateringhole - well duh (if you don’t know, that’s my Facebook Group)

  • QB-HQ - a Facebook Group based on Quickbooks, but offers so much more

  • Xero Mastermind - a Facebook Group based on Xero, but offers so much more

  • #taxtwitter - an enlightening and fun tax-ish Twitter hashtag to follow (yes, I used “tax and” fun in the same line)

  • Future Firm** - this is the place to be if you are looking to scale your firm

  • Realize.Io** - a community that is very tech and automation driven

  • Roundtable Labs** - a community for accountability, support and celebration of goals and problem-solving

    **paid communities

What’s Cooking?

Super fun hack for noodle layers (lasagne, Mexican pie…) or noodle pockets (ravioli, potstickers…)

Wonton wrappers

They are the perfect thickness and don’t need pre-cooking. Yes, there are pre-cooked sheet noodles but I’ve had no luck with texture.

Give the wontons a go next time and I’m sure you’ll thank me.

- Buon appetito (or whatever language salutation is appropriate) -

Simply yours, Kellie :-}

***Accounting Professionals I admire

Kellie Parks, CPB

Cloud Process Creator

I craft processes and automation for future-thinking accounting professionals who believe in the mightiness of online technology.

I want every accounting professional to love running a cloud-based business as much as I do.

Embracing the cloud requires effective best practices, consistent communication, and efficient processes, systems, and workflows. That's why we have dozens of pre-built templates to take the pain out of creating optimization in your firm.

Certified or partnered in over a dozen cloud applications, Alumni Intuit International Trainer Writer Network and the FreshBooks Partner Council.

I am a runner, water/snow skier and live-music fan.

I’m always wondering what you would do more of—outside of work—if processes, automation, and apps gave you your life back.
