Real People
I’m still pausing (aka hanging out on Estero Island, Florida) to try to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. But I did go to Scaling New Heights last week and that definitely gave me some insight to one thing.
I am going again!
It’s back to it’s usual time slot in June. If you can swing this one or any of the upcoming #InRealLifeEvents I suggest you do.
Here’s a conference list from David Leary.
So what happened at Scaling New Heights that was so wonderful?
People
…real …live …accounting people!
The sessions were great, the exhibit hall was great, the dinners and drancing* were great - it was all great.
But nerding out with friends was da bomb, baby!
Organic interactions about accounting, apps, clients, each other, and managing our businesses were magical.
I would never have had a random conversation about inventory builds during a scheduled Zoom session. And discover that my colleague Hector and I both did ridiculously intense ones for awning companies.
There would have never been the mention by a friend Alisa that she has started a company that gets podcasts off the ground. She is running this alongside her accounting practice.
Random act of silliness: Alisa and I commandeered a men’s washroom trailer at Connect San Jose 2019. We didn’t know each other at the time, but we have been fast friends since.
I don’t think that happens at virtual events :-}
How about an animated convo about class tracking vs tags vs projects vs a simple % of income report?
I don’t have those during the cocktail hour with my at-home-girlfriends. You?
I hosted a session on Profiling Your Ideal Client and Crafting Communications to Collaborate With Them (just a short little title…). I got to move around the room, look people in the eye, and feel their vibe.
But more importantly, they had chances to speak and interact! To share their experiences, ask questions (of me and of each other), and feel heard.
With virtual sessions I felt it was always just me, occasionally with a moderator or fellow panelist, yabbering on. That’s never been my gig, so to have a room full of people collaborating was completely liberating - for me and most definitely for them.
It was 100 minutes of sheer fun!
Lively discussions with app partners are da bomb.
The after-hours funness was - well - fun.
#RolinWithBrolin, Heather, Andrew, many Jamies (are all app founders named Jamie?), Twyla, the Roundtablelabs Crew, and far too many folks to list - I didn’t realize how much I missed making poor life choices with my accounting industry peeps!
Rather than a long blog post on SNH21 here’s a recap from Hector Garcia and Andrew Wall on the conference.
*Drinking and dancing
